Bone Density ScreeningsAccording to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, more than 10 million Americans have Osteoporosis and another 34 million are at risk because of their low bone mass. Those at risk arent aware until it progresses to point where fractures to hip, spine, or wrist are likely to occur. Osteoporosis is largely preventable and treatable. A key factor in this success has been the availability of new and improved equipment to measure bone density. The Johnston-Willis Campus of CJW Medical Center recently acquired a state-of-the-art DXA bone densitometer. A bone densitometer is also available on the Chippenham campus. Coverage & AppointmentsState Law mandates that all bone densitometry test require a physicians order. Please ask your physician for a prescription for the screening and call 804-327-8706 to schedule an appointment. If you need a physician referral, please call 804-320-DOCS. Medicare will cover bone density measurement for beneficiaries at risk for osteoporosis and other bone abnormalities. Eligible beneficiaries will be able to have their bone mass measured once every two years, or more often, if medically necessary. Beneficiaries should consult with their doctors about whether and when they might need one of these tests. Preparation for ScreeningFor best results, please do not wear clothing with metal snaps or zippers near your waist or torso. Also, do not take calcium supplements for three days prior to the screening. |
